Johnny, do you want me to take the belt to your arse?! April 24, 2006

When I came across this father's Blog, even though I am not yet a parent, I totally understand where he is coming from in terms of internet filtering for children and the websites they are restricted from.  The man made a point that most kids once told not to do something will only make them want to do it more, and filtering out smut on the net will leave their minds still curious.  To me, this reminds me the forbidden fruit that Adam and Eve ate during Biblical times.  Curiosity will always lead the mind to the action that it knows might not always be right. I am by no means justifying that a kid should have access to internet porn, but it is a public domain, and they should be educated on it – rather than banned.  My point is, this father is very right that internet filtering is not a good substitute for parenting; it lacks a good relationship with communication that would have to exist as a result of lecturing your kids to their face what they should not go to on the net.

After reading your draft article, I found section III. The Quiet Whisper of Gay Sexuality to be the most interesting. I agree with a lot it has to offer, however you only have to pick up the local magazine – About to see healthy, strong men that are advertising for bath houses in Toronto and Southern Ontario.  Lockers, motel style rooms and rates, saunas, massages, day passes, and passive sex are thrown all over.  These are the same men that are rarely portrayed in real life that are made to look like sex gods.  To me, that gives off the stereotype of what a place like that is like, and the patrons that attend it do while there.  Does this mean that only attractive, healthy, and discreet men frequent these bath houses in search for the same?  Is this yet another outlet for the "closeted" male, and is it the safest resource for a young curious male to go to?

Zoning, this is my field this week :) o r should i say last. oops. Seattle vs. Detroit (Young v. American Mini Theatres, 1976) case i found very interesting. Every single village, town, city, borough, any basic municipality with governing laws can alter their code to eliminate even lets say Walmart, as the Amherst Planning Board recently changed their code virtually eliminating a "big box" store such as Target, Best Buy, Walmart – you get the idea – to open. They have the same ability to write into code that an Adult Sex Entertainment Venue may have to be so many feet away from a school, church, and may not be next to any commercial or residential properties. This includes any video stores, theatres, billboards, etc. That is why even here in Buffalo, most of the adult erotica stores where magazines, toys, videos, and other material are sold are located mainly in industrial districts on the outskirts of neighborhoods.

I think all semester obscenity and indecency has really played a big part of the course the entire semester, maybe not so bluntly but whenever mentioning the course to someone I am talking to, they always think that the course has obscene material in it that we have to watch or somehow sample? Yeah, you're telling me. Indecent is more like the stuff we talk about. I wouldn't reccomend watching these lectures around anyone even in high school. Speaking of which, when I watched lecture 23 on obscenity, my roomate's 15 year old brother who is visiting from another state walked by and was like what are you watching, with a weird look on his face. I think the SEC's authority to regulate the communal good is a good thing, but I feel that more stuff is allowed now then 40 years ago, or even 10. Growing up I remember hearing words like Bitch and other minor words even being blocked out on the radio. I found it so interesting to hear that in the United States, we actually have a time from 10pm-6am to uncensor indecent material. It is good to learn small bits of every day life on here.

Myth #6 – Men are the dominated April 1, 2006

Since this is opposite week, I decided why not be completely ridiculous, so no one please take me seriously.

Women who work in porn are empowered because they totally get to call all of the shots.  I can't remember a film that didn't have a man tied down to a bed, in pain while a woman did everything she ever wanted to him.  I mean so what if he is in pain, begging for you to stop, you are the shot caller, and what you say goes.  Even if other men on the set are telling you to stop it, that he can't bare, the rape continues.  When was the last time you saw an uncomfortable woman in a porn? You don't have to take long to answer rarely.  Men actually like this idea that the woman is in control, and he is being totally submissive to her.  They have their buddies come over, have beer, and throw on the porn that has a man being whipped by a dominatrix in leather, and kicked in the balls until he can barely stay with it.

The fact that someone out there might think that women call all the shots, therefore entitling them with power is so right, congrats to you for making this myth a reality!

Throughout the semester, I have came across many, many interesting bloggers, and posts.  However, many people did not even take the time to alter the title's of their blogs, or try to make themselves easily distinguishable from others.  I am sure more than half of the class has posted excellent blogs, but since I am not the professor, I will admit I have not read anywhere close to half of them.  The three I picked below were from personal choice, and I have stated why.

I feel that the first blog I usually go to read when I read a classmates blog is hotchics.  I find her titles to be luring, and the content to be very interesting.  Stellar blog, to me.
Another blogger that I like for a sense of rebellion is no naughties. I like the unique name of the blogger, and the way he goes about expressing his feelings about topics.

The last blogger that I liked was casey's blog. I think that while coming across many blogs, some go too far in length without really getting their point across.  I like this blog for the simple reason that the responses are short, sweet and to the point. I check it often.

Sinner or self righteous? April 1, 2006

Being raised a Catholic, the issue of sex was never really brought up in my household, or even in mass for that matter.  It was almost a given that sex was for the married couple, and contraception is a no no.  Basically, if one has a desire for self pleasure, or an attraction to the same sex, you must supress these thoughts, otherwise you are a sinner. I think self exploration is one of the first steps in figuring out your own body, and should in no way be condemned.  While I do not agree with the religious view on pornography, I can easily agree with the feminist point of view.  I like what Mary Helen Ross had to say in regards to the fact that many female porn stars look like they are being degraded. It seems as if I am generalizing, but every porn that I have viewed it seems as if the women involved really are being degraded, and I almost feel a sense of pity for them, rather than excitement.
